Dance competitions run the gamut from (sorry) boring ballet recitals to the real battle. The real battle. The organic spontaneous dance competitions that arise at the party or in the club, or in earlier times at raves, and even earlier times at the hops.

Individuals, or oftentimes whole crews would throw down and show their skills in sometimes rehearsed, sometimes improvised, sometimes planned, and sometimes spontaneous dance competitions that range from be-bopping, swinging, and twisting in the fifties to boogying, popping, locking, and break dancing in more recent times. Dance competitions today involve unbelievable acrobatics and movements that would have made mom and dad both pass out from shock in the old days. In times past dance competitions sometimes consisted of a dance marathon with a cash prize. The last couple left standing after all the rest had collapsed from exhaustion was the winner.

Cash prizes are still given out at dance competitions now, only people are dancing steps and rocking tightly choreographed drill team style routines that require months of practice to master. One of the newest twists on dance competitions is a show out of Mexico called "Bailando Por la Boda" (dancing for a wedding) where one member of the hopeful couple is paired with a well-known actor/actress, singer/performer and they must dance as a couple, competing for the grand prize - an all expense paid dream wedding. It is the most recent in a series of dance competitions called "Bailando Por un Sueno" (dancing for a dream) where individuals danced in competition to fund a favorite charity or help a sick person.
